Len Castle has been described as one of New Zealand’s leading potters. His talent has been recognized around the world and is most recently displayed in his new book “Len Castle Potter” winner of the 2003 Montana Book awards shortlist category of Best Illustrative. Just published, this superbly illustrated book celebrates his life and work. It is a non-profit, no royalties publication. Prime Minister Helen Clark, author of the foreword of his book, said Castle’s work “epitomises the vitality of the 20th century craft movement, its vitality, its deeply indigenous origins and the sophistication of its craftsmanship and artistry.”

The book is a photographic record of Castle’s work over the period of 1947-2001. Castle has created several photo essays to illustrate themes such as, ‘The Potter as an Alchemist,’ ‘Ceramics from Volcanic and Geothermal Landscapes,’ and ‘Sea-Secrets and Fossils.’

Written contents include a biography by potter Nancy Pel, essays by New Zealand Herald art critic T J MacNamara, design historian Douglas Lloyd-Jenkins and legendary arts professional Galvan MacNamara otherwise known as James Mack.

Castle writes about his feelings, thoughts and experiences of 54 years with clay and fire as partners during the creative process, and commented on many of the works and their significance to him.
