How to apply to Kala Institute Artist-In-Residence Program

Artists working in various printmaking techniques, photo-processes, book arts and digital media including sound / video production can apply to become an Artist-in-Residence at Kala Art Institute. Residency applications are accepted throughout the year.

Bay Area artists:
Can make an appointment with Kala's Executive and Artistic Directors, Archana Horsting and Yuzo Nakano, for an in-person portfolio review and interview;

Artists living elsewhere can submit the following by mail:

  • Resume
  • A portfolio of actual work, slides or photographs of the artwork
  • Slide list
  • A letter describing artistic goals
  • Self-addressed envelope with correct return postage

    Artists who apply for residency should be familiar with at least one of the media offered at Kala, and have a plan for the work they wish to accomplish during their residency.
